The Great Reset

Evolving shopping modes and the impact on brands.

The premise

Shopping is no longer one act. It's a stack of shopping modes, and with every new mode the shopper adds, power quietly divides and changes hands.

Each modality — store visit, search, scroll, order — rewires who explores, who controls the moment of choice, and what a brand is even for. The modes don't replace one another; they accumulate.

As they stack, the marketplace democratizes, ecosystems start to compete with brands, and the focus of decision drifts from the shopper toward platforms, algorithms and, finally, agents. This is the handover.

The strategic reading
The core mechanic

The online modes train the shopper to expect frictionless — and that expectation doesn't stay online. The shopper starts demanding the same fluidity from brick & mortar. So purchase missions multiply and the channels fragment: no single format owns the trip anymore.

05
01

The online modalities accustom the shopper to frictionless, and the shopper then starts to demand less friction — more fluidity — across every channel, brick & mortar included. The seamlessness of the screen becomes the new baseline for the store.

02

As that demand spreads, purchase missions multiply and the channels fragment: the trip splinters across formats, and no single one owns it.

03

As first-tier manufacturers lose hegemony to falling barriers, price gaps reach unimaginable levels, value logics distort, and shoppers find motivation in finding the glitch in the system.

04

In the middle of all this, AI opens a door to agentic commerce (at first only as a query), simplifying the comparison of functional benefits and differentiators — especially for durables and low-frequency purchases.

05

Brands are forced to raise barriers somehow, build loyalty in a very difficult environment, and hold an arsenal of differentiators and functionals backed by credible, decodable RTBs — so they don't lose in a future where the commercial could lose relevance and the purchase may no longer be decided by a person.

Shopper feelings

As shopping modalities keep stacking, the shopper's feelings shift with them.

Relevance = distance from the center (1–5). Toggle modes to add or remove them; hover or tap any point for the read.
The read

While desire is being created in a multisensorial way at the stores or influenced by the algorithm and social media, transparency that leads to trust is more on the E-commerce side with reviews and control, but along with a mental burden that could be cut-loose by delegating to an agent.

Belonging and identity erode and change from local communities to tribes, while sensoriality becomes highly relevant where it can take place.

Implications

Two jobs, at once.

As the shopper hands decision-making across to people, platforms and machines, brands have to win on two fronts in parallel.

01
The human front

Build desire with people.

  • Extreme sensoriality and brand experience in the real life
  • Boost desire on-line
  • Intervene culture to gain relevance through influencers and people
  • Strengthen the local footprint, reach communities and tribes
02
The machine front

Build eligibility with machines.

  • Understand the AI logic
  • Win in product superiority with differential functionalities and decodable RTBs

Business Meets Culture

Where brands are
built from culture.

If commercial relevance fades and a person may no longer decide the purchase, brands need credible, machine-readable RTBs and differentiators — and a read on culture that no algorithm owns. That's what we do.
